For the first class of the second semester we started the class by watching a clip from ‘FRIENDS’ , the one where joey writes a letter of recommendation to the adoption agency for Chandler and Monica.
Then we discussed the importance of knowing the meaning of words and their synonyms and whether we can replace a word with its synonym in a sentence.
In my opinion, knowing the meaning of the words we use is extremely important as it prevents us from using them out of context. And even though synonyms are just words that are similar to the word we are using they cannot always be used as a replacement as it may change the meaning of the sentence or make it completely irrelevant.
We then did a group activity where we were given a word and we had to enact those words in a small skit. The word given to my group was ‘Trepidation’. Trepidation means a feeling of fear or anxiety.
We tried to show this in our skit by portraying being scared of a cockroach. The audience correctly guessed the synonyms and hence we were successful in our objective.
This exercise taught me the importance of knowing the meanings of words and their synonyms and if they work as a replacement or not.
Week – 2
Being absent for this lecture, this post is about the response I got from my peers.
In this class, the movie ‘Amelie” was shown. This movie is about a Amélie who is an innocent and naive girl in Paris with her own sense of justice. She decides to help those around her and, along the way, discovers love.
Everyone then jotted down a list of words they associated with the movie.
Week – 3
Being absent for this lecture, this post is about the response I got from my peers.
This week, we discussed about the photos we had clicked using the gestalt principles in it. We then discussed the stories read in the seminar class from the book “Invisible cities”.
We were then given our next assignment for which we had to draw 3 iterations of what we imagined each city to be like and have to do this for 5 cities. The illustrations had to be 3 by 3 inch boxes.
Week – 4
This week, we showed ma’am our 15 illustrations for the invisible cities. My sketches were a combination of literal and abstract. We discussed these thumbnails further.
We were then told to imagine our dream city and write down the key elements of this city.
The list of elements for my city are as follows: floating houses, less population, less pollution, sustainable, existence of good and evil, improper law and order, sustainable, modern, chic and proper roads.
For our next assignment we were told to make 3 iterations for our dream city in a 10″ by 10″ square.
Week – 5
This class we showed ma’am the 3 thumbnails for our dream city.
We then learnt about our 8th week project and also the end game of this process which is that we have to make a tunnel box.
We have to come with ways to visualize our dream city and make it interesting by using a source of light.
To make a tunnel box you have to first plan out the different layers, which is what I started doing.
My first layer was of trees and leaves, my second layer had human figures using their special powers (flying, teleporting, moving things with the mind, etc.) and my third layer had the floating houses.
I found this composition to be quite interesting and was happy with it.
Week – 6
Having been absent for this week’s class, this post is based on my understanding of the class through my peers.
In this week’s class, we started working on our prototype for the tunnel box. We used cartridge sheets to make the layers and the box itself.
First we started off by making each layer individually and then moved onto the box at the end.
Week – 7
This week we did a peer review on the prototypes that we had made. Getting a review on my prototype helped me work on it and improve it further.
Giving feedback on other’s models also helped me understand what my model was lacking and how I could make it better.
I realised that my prototype had a lot of negative space and that the elements in each layer didn’t get the chance to shine on their own while complimenting each other. It looked crowded in some places and empty in others.
I could also do a better job at making it more neat and precise, get rid of the pencil marks and the construction of the box itself could be better.
The prototype
Week – 8
In this week’s class, we submitted our final tunnel boxes. I made the changes that I found necessary.
I was quite happy with how this box turned out to be. It looked neater and was not too crowded or chaotic while not being too empty as well. I found it to be well balanced.
I also successfully gave it the depth that was lacking from the prototype.
The final tunnel box
Week – 9
This week, we discussed the electives we all had been attending.
We discussed good and bad design and various other aspects of design.
I then started to list down categories and elements of the 3 disciplines of my choice. I chose Communication design, Product design and Interior design as they were my first 3 choices.
For each discipline, I listed the categories and elements and discussed them with ma’am.
After I got the approval, I started to think how I wanted to represent these in a mind map.
This process helped me understand each discipline better and get a clear idea of what they consisted of.
Week – 10
Having been absent for this week’s class, this post is based on my understanding of the class through my peers.
This week we worked on our mind maps further and get input on the same.
We then chose which 1 discipline we wanted to work on and decided upon 1 aspect.
I chose communication design, wherein I chose advertising.
There are various aspects of advertising as well, I listed them down and made a mind map on the same.
This process helped me understand advertising better and how it has so many different forms.
Week – 11
This week, I had to choose an aspect of advertising and break it down further.
I chose to work on posters. Posters also have different types. I made a mind map to get a clear visual representation of these types so that I can decide what toxwork on further.
I decided to work on movie posters. The main functionality of a poster is to convey a message and have impact.
We were asked to make 5 iterations of these posters by changing it’s form but keeping the function same. I started working on these iterations and realized the endless possibilities that a poster could be.
I had to hence set my mind on a few good ideas of the bunch and put it down on paper.
Week – 12
This week, we worked on our iterations.
I came up with a few but wasn’t quite satisfied with them.
For some reason, I could not understand how to go about this. I could not figure out how I wanted to go about it.
It helped me to see other’s iterations. It showed me how everyone was going about their objects.
I then sort of got figured out in which direction I wanted to go with my movie poster iterations.
The following are my iterations for this week.
Week – 13
This week I made my final iterations. After facing a block, I was finally able to figure out how I wanted to go about them.
This week really taught how not to be satisfied with average and not to give up.
The following are my iterations.
Week – 14
After finalizing the third iteration, I started to think about the space where it would be applied and who will be interacting with it.
I thought that this would work well in a theatre as people would interact with it quite well.
This is a waterfall poster that will have all the genres so that people can browse through their preferences.
This is how the space will look.
This week I also worked on my prototype. I used paper to make my object. I also made a mock-up space using this prototype.
A mock-up of the space and the object to show their interaction.
Week – 15
This week was the review week and hence we had to present our final presentations.
I was quite satisfied with my work and was also confident about my research and element design.
I got a positive feedback but also some comments on how I could have made improvements. I got to learn a lot by the feedback sir was giving to everyone.
